Kajukenbo is a hybrid martial art that combines techniques from karate, judo, kenpo, and boxing. It was developed in the late 1940s in the Palama Settlement neighborhood of Honolulu, Hawaii, by a group of martial artists who wanted to create a fighting system that would be effective in real-world self-defense situations. Kajukenbo emphasizes the use of strikes, kicks, joint locks, and throws, and also includes elements of ground fighting and weapon defense. It is considered to be one of the first mixed martial arts and it has been influential in the development of other hybrid martial arts such as Jeet Kune Do and Krav Maga.
